Marine animals of all types luxuriate in the Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, ranging from beluga whales, who can be viewed from above ground outdoors or through underwater windows, to harmless stingrays, residing in a pool where they can be touched. Founded by underwater explorer Robert Ballard, the aquarium also has a collection of deep sea exploration craft and interactive displays on the findings and lessons of these journeys. Visitors can watch whale, seal, and penguin feedings or catch a show featuring the center's enthralling sea lions. It is located north of Mystic, two miles northeast of the Mystic Seaport museum, which features a recreated and functioning 19th century seaport.
